The documented development of Galiceño is connected with Mexico during the colonial period. Selection continued within small Iberian-derived horses maintained in Mexico, with practical emphasis on riding, transport and farm work.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is twentieth-century Galiceno registry in North America. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, efficient pony with substance appropriate to its size. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates Galiceño with these commonly valued traits: Gentle, Willing, Sure-footed, Friendly, Reliable. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.
