American Miniature Horse

The American Miniature Horse was developed in the United States during the twentieth century from several populations of small equines. Its ancestry is not represented by one uninterrupted foundation line, and miniature size alone does not establish registration.

The American Miniature Horse Registry began under the American Shetland Pony Club in 1972. The separate American Miniature Horse Association was founded in Texas in 1978. These registries use different height divisions and rules, so a horse's papers must identify the registering authority.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, efficient pony with substance appropriate to its size. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates American Miniature Horse with these commonly valued traits: Friendly, Gentle, Intelligent, People-oriented, Docile. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.

Age, training, management and previous experience have a major influence on temperament. A prospective owner should therefore assess the particular horse in familiar surroundings and under the type of work expected of it.
