The documented development of Dulmen Pony is connected with Merfelder Bruch, Westphalia over a long period of regional selection. The present population descends from a managed free-ranging population of regional ponies; natural and management pressures favoured survival in a free-ranging environment.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is herd management by the House of Croÿ. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.
