Exmoor Pony

The Exmoor Pony is associated with the uplands of Exmoor in south-west England, where semi-feral herds were managed within a working pastoral landscape. A major documented turning point came in 1818, when the Royal Forest was sold. Sir Thomas Acland retained part of the old herd and moved it to Winsford Hill; the Anchor herd that followed became important to later breed history.

The Exmoor Pony Society was founded in 1921 and developed inspection and registration to protect the population. The Second World War caused severe losses, after which surviving herds and careful breeding supported recovery. Modern registration is based on accepted parentage and inspection, so primitive-looking colouring or life on Exmoor alone does not establish breed identity.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, efficient pony with substance appropriate to its size. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates Exmoor Pony with these commonly valued traits: Hardy, Intelligent, Independent, Sure-footed, Alert. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.

Age, training, management and previous experience have a major influence on temperament. A prospective owner should therefore assess the particular horse in familiar surroundings and under the type of work expected of it.

Typical areas of use include Children, Families, Conservation, Trail riders. Actual suitability depends on training, health, conformation and the rider’s experience; the breed name alone is not enough to judge a match.
