The documented development of Lokai is connected with Tajikistan over a long period of regional selection. Breeders crossed regional mountain mares, Karabair and Oriental riding-horse lines and selected the descendants for sure-footed transport and work in difficult terrain.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is twentieth-century state breeding programme. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, sure-footed type with efficient movement. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates Lokai with these commonly valued traits: Hardy, Sure-footed, Enduring, Agile, Reliable. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.

Age, training, management and previous experience have a major influence on temperament. A prospective owner should therefore assess the particular horse in familiar surroundings and under the type of work expected of it.

Typical areas of use include Trail riders, Endurance riders, Leisure riders. Actual suitability depends on training, health, conformation and the rider’s experience; the breed name alone is not enough to judge a match.
