Noma

The documented development of Noma is connected with Imabari and the former Noma district, Shikoku over a long period of regional selection. Selection continued within small regional pack and farm horses, with practical emphasis on riding, transport and farm work.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is Japanese native-breed conservation programme. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, efficient pony with substance appropriate to its size. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates Noma with these commonly valued traits: Hardy, Gentle, Sure-footed, Friendly, Calm. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.

Age, training, management and previous experience have a major influence on temperament. A prospective owner should therefore assess the particular horse in familiar surroundings and under the type of work expected of it.

Typical areas of use include Children, Conservation, Families. Actual suitability depends on training, health, conformation and the rider’s experience; the breed name alone is not enough to judge a match.
