Origin & history

Paso Fino populations descend from Iberian horses brought to the Caribbean and mainland Americas from the late fifteenth century. Centuries of selection for a smooth, natural four-beat lateral gait produced distinct traditions in Puerto Rico and Colombia, with related populations elsewhere in Latin America. These lines share Spanish roots but developed separately and should not be treated as historically identical.

Paso Finos entered the continental United States from Puerto Rico in the mid-1940s, followed by increasing Colombian imports in the 1960s. The US association formed in 1972 and now accepts recognised international registries while verifying bloodlines through DNA. Its American population may combine Puerto Rican and Colombian ancestry. “Paso Fino” therefore denotes documented heritage and gait genetics, not any horse trained to perform a smooth lateral gait.

Conformation

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a functional riding horse whose balance supports regular, comfortable movement. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

Temperament

The breed taxonomy associates Paso Fino with these commonly valued traits: Spirited, Willing, Sure-footed, Energetic, Gentle. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.

Age, training, management and previous experience have a major influence on temperament. A prospective owner should therefore assess the particular horse in familiar surroundings and under the type of work expected of it.

Typical uses

Typical areas of use include Trail riders, Leisure riders, Experienced amateurs. Actual suitability depends on training, health, conformation and the rider’s experience; the breed name alone is not enough to judge a match.

Care & health

Paso Fino does not replace individual veterinary and farriery assessment. Routine care should reflect age and workload and include suitable feeding, hoof and dental care, vaccination and parasite control agreed with local professionals.

Before purchase, review identification and available health records and arrange an independent pre-purchase examination appropriate to the intended use.
