The documented development of Sorraia is connected with lower Tagus and Sorraia river region, Portugal during the early twentieth century. Conservation breeding drew on a remnant free-ranging population documented by Ruy d’Andrade, with selection and management focused on survival in a free-ranging environment.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is twentieth-century Sorraia conservation herds and studbook records. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a functional, economical type that can vary between regional populations. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.
