The documented development of Yili Horse is connected with Ili Valley, Xinjiang during the middle of the twentieth century. Breeders crossed Kazakh mares, Don, Orlov Trotter and other imported stallion lines and selected the descendants for riding, transport and farm work.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is Chinese national livestock genetic-resource programme.
