The documented development of Banker Horse is connected with the Outer Banks of North Carolina during the colonial period. The present population descends from colonial domestic horses, including horses of Iberian ancestry; natural and management pressures favoured survival in a free-ranging environment.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is managed herds at Corolla and Shackleford Banks.
