Kiso Horse

The documented development of Kiso Horse is connected with Kiso Valley, Honshu over a long period of regional selection. Selection continued within regional Japanese pack, farm and military horses, with practical emphasis on sure-footed transport and work in difficult terrain.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is Kiso Uma no Sato conservation breeding. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, efficient pony with substance appropriate to its size.
