Origin & history

The historical core of the registered Purebred Spanish Horse (PRE) was shaped in Andalusia. In the mid-sixteenth century, King Philip II reorganised royal horse breeding and ordered the construction of the Royal Stables of Córdoba, where selected stallions and mares from the Guadalquivir area were assembled. Courtly riding and Renaissance equestrian culture helped establish the agile, collected Spanish riding-horse type.

The population passed through wars and periods of contraction, but organised breeding preserved documented lines. In current official usage, PRE means a horse meeting the genealogical and registration requirements of the Spanish mother studbook managed by ANCCE. “Andalusian” is used more broadly in some countries and does not by itself prove PRE status; buyers should verify the passport and entry in LG PRE rather than infer purity from appearance.

Conformation

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, uphill riding horse suited to balance and collection. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

Temperament

The breed taxonomy associates Andalusian with these commonly valued traits: Intelligent, Docile, Gentle, Trainable, Sensitive. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.

Age, training, management and previous experience have a major influence on temperament. A prospective owner should therefore assess the particular horse in familiar surroundings and under the type of work expected of it.

Typical uses

Typical areas of use include Classical dressage, Dressage riders, Working equitation, Leisure riders. Actual suitability depends on training, health, conformation and the rider’s experience; the breed name alone is not enough to judge a match.

Care & health

Andalusian does not replace individual veterinary and farriery assessment. Routine care should reflect age and workload and include suitable feeding, hoof and dental care, vaccination and parasite control agreed with local professionals.

Before purchase, review identification and available health records and arrange an independent pre-purchase examination appropriate to the intended use.
