The documented development of Balikun is connected with Balikun County, Xinjiang over a long period of regional selection. Selection continued within regional Central Asian mountain horses, with practical emphasis on sure-footed transport and work in difficult terrain.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is Chinese national livestock genetic-resource programme. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, sure-footed type with efficient movement. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.
