The documented development of Hequ Horse is connected with upper Yellow River on the Tibetan Plateau over a long period of regional selection. Selection continued within regional plateau horse populations, with practical emphasis on riding, transport and farm work.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is Chinese national livestock genetic-resource programme. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, muscular riding horse designed for acceleration, agility and practical work. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates Hequ Horse with these commonly valued traits: Hardy, Sure-footed, Enduring, Reliable, Calm. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.
