Menorquín

The documented development of Menorquín is connected with Menorca, Spain over a long period of regional selection. Related working populations, including the island’s black riding-horse population, were brought under a more formal breed definition focused on reliable saddle work.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is 1987 — formal Menorquín studbook. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a compact, uphill riding horse suited to balance and collection. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates Menorquín with these commonly valued traits: Spirited, Agile, Intelligent, Willing, Bold. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.
