The documented development of Murgese is connected with Murge plateau in Apulia, Italy over a long period of regional selection. Selection continued within regional riding and farm horses selected in the limestone uplands, with practical emphasis on riding, transport and farm work.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is 1920s — formal Murgese studbook development. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a strong, expressive type with balance suited to collected work or driving. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates Murgese with these commonly valued traits: Gentle, Docile, Hardy, Willing, Sure-footed. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.
