The documented development of Namib Desert Horse is connected with Garub and the Namib Desert during the early twentieth century. The present population descends from domestic horses of uncertain military and civilian origin; natural and management pressures favoured survival in a free-ranging environment.

Organised recording later gave the population a clearer breeding framework; an important reference point is Namibian desert-horse monitoring programme. Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a functional, economical type that can vary between regional populations. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.
