Origin & history

Old Kladruber breeding is centred on Kladruby nad Labem, where horses had been bred by the mid-fourteenth century. Emperor Rudolf II raised the establishment to an imperial court stud in 1579. Old Spanish and Italian horses formed the basis of a substantial gala carriage horse intended for ceremonial service at the Habsburg courts in Prague and Vienna.

After 1918 the former court herd faced dispersal. The grey line survived at Kladruby, while professor František Bílek reconstructed the nearly lost black line from remaining animals; black Kladrubers are now bred at Slatiňany. The National Stud maintains the mother studbook and both colour populations as a Czech genetic and cultural resource. Breed identity therefore rests on documented descent and conservation breeding, not merely on a baroque outline or black or grey coat.

Conformation

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a strong, expressive type with balance suited to collected work or driving. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

Temperament

The breed taxonomy associates Old Kladruber with these commonly valued traits: Gentle, Docile, Reliable, Trainable, Even-tempered. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.

Age, training, management and previous experience have a major influence on temperament. A prospective owner should therefore assess the particular horse in familiar surroundings and under the type of work expected of it.

Typical uses

Typical areas of use include Driving enthusiasts, Classical dressage, Leisure riders, Breeding. Actual suitability depends on training, health, conformation and the rider’s experience; the breed name alone is not enough to judge a match.

Care & health

Old Kladruber does not replace individual veterinary and farriery assessment. Routine care should reflect age and workload and include suitable feeding, hoof and dental care, vaccination and parasite control agreed with local professionals.

Before purchase, review identification and available health records and arrange an independent pre-purchase examination appropriate to the intended use.
