Black Forest

Horse breeding in the southern Black Forest has older documentary roots, but organised breeding of the Black Forest Coldblood began in 1896 with the cooperative at St. Märgen. The relatively light, mobile draught type served farms, forestry and local transport in steep terrain.

Mechanisation after the Second World War sharply reduced the breeding population. Conservation support and new use in driving and leisure work helped retain the breed. The Baden-Württemberg association maintains the studbook of origin; the familiar dark chestnut coat with a light mane is characteristic, but registration still depends on pedigree and breeding rules.

The expected build follows the breed’s original purpose: a powerful horse with substantial bone and musculature for controlled pulling power. There can be meaningful variation between lines, sexes and individual horses. Conformation is best assessed in relation to sound movement, workload and the intended discipline.

The breed taxonomy associates Black Forest with these commonly valued traits: Gentle, Calm, Willing, Hardy, Friendly. They are tendencies rather than a guarantee of an individual horse’s behaviour.

Age, training, management and previous experience have a major influence on temperament. A prospective owner should therefore assess the particular horse in familiar surroundings and under the type of work expected of it.

Typical areas of use include Driving enthusiasts, Farm work, Forestry, Leisure riders. Actual suitability depends on training, health, conformation and the rider’s experience; the breed name alone is not enough to judge a match.
