The documented development of Castillonnais is connected with Ariège Pyrenees, France over a long period of regional selection. Selection continued within regional mountain and cavalry horses, with practical emphasis on sure-footed transport and work in difficult terrain.

Historic regional type and current registered breed are not always identical, so pedigree or conservation records matter more than appearance alone.
